Is it called ‘Smart’ because it runs on chocolate?

That is very fun, and it should run on chocolate. I just am sad that we cannot get Smart cars here in the US. Down with government regulations. Let us all kill ourselves in tiny cars if we choose to do so.

I think the benefit would be, at least for me, that there would be absolutely no chance of getting into any accident, because if the Le Smart Car ran on M&Ms, I’d be too busy refueling myself instead of driving.

The plus side would be that I could just pelt M&Ms at those pushy New York drivers I contend with every day.

The Smart passes the crash tests. It also regularly passes my Lancia on the Autostrada. There is no good reason at all why this should not be THE Manhattan vehicle of choice, but they should reduce parking by half, because it takes 1/2 of a parking space.
What if it crashes isto a Hummer or a pick-up? Make those illegal within city limits!

Rumor has it they’re introducing a Smart car for the US market, with modifications (image if you got bumped by a Hummer!) The downside is they’ve gotten pricey here, around 13K euros. There are special reduced-rate parking spaces for Smart cars in French garages, since they take up less room.

But the biggest expense is having to add M&M’s every few days.

I think the US is already gearing up for the introduction of the Smart Car. It would explain why, when I was driving up Route 5 yesterday on my way back to SF from LA and I had a chocolate craving, the only chocolate I could find at the gas station were M&M’s. I was craving a good bittersweet chocolate, but resigned myself to accept what was available. I bought them but found them too sweet and lacking the rich chocolate taste I was craving. After reading your post, I now realize they were being sold to fuel Smart Cars, not to satisfy chocolate cravings. Boy, do I feel foolish. Thanks.

LOL, Brett’s comment was even funnier than your photo. I think my little Suzuki Sidekick is almost this small. I should try throwing some M&Ms into it. Definitely cheaper than gas. Does this thing come in 4WD?

Yes, it does, farmgirl, but it is low to the ground. Check out the Smart Car website sometime. Coolest thing is the body panels can be snapped off and replaced, so you could alter the color for Christmas or your birthday. The big bands surrounding the panels are the protective frame which makes it safe.
It comes in deisel, too, and I think there is a convertible nowadays. However, if you are carrying a passenger, you can only stow your purse in the boot. I didn’t get one because I cart cats in carriers and bags of manure. You can just lead a sheep to where you want to fertilize, I can’t unless I win your contest.

They need to use some of those here in Bloomington! Sometimes I think that parking is at even more of a premium here than it was when I visited Paris several years ago… although most of that probably has to do with the fact that they allow those stupid Hummers and Escalades to park all over the place. (Who needs a military off-road vehicle in a city that was the inspiration for Mellencamp’s “Small Town”. I mean, really.)

And heck, there’s a Walmart AND a Sam’s Club, so there’d ah… be no shortage of bulk M&Ms…

I happen to own a hummer h2, hummer h3, and a cadillac esacalde EXT and I have never been able to park where ever i want or all over the place whatever you say. I thinks your just jealouse cause you arent rich and dont own a nice vehicle and i bet that if you did own one then you would prak all over the place….
