I’m excited to announce the release of the e-book of my Paris Pastry Guide!

With over 300 addresses for the best places in Paris for chocolates, pastries, and other confections, this comprehensive guide is the perfect sweet companion for your trip to Paris. But even if you’re not planning a trip, there’s plenty of pictures to so you can enjoy the scrumptious pastries of Paris – wherever you are!

The Paris Pastry e-book is available in three formats:

  • E.Pub: For the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Sony eReader, Kobo, and Blackberry.

  • Mobi: For Kindle, MobiPocket, and Calibre.

  • Kindle: The Kindle version is available on Amazon.

They can be downloaded via the Paris Pastry website. It will soon be available in the iBooks bookstore and Barnes & Noble (Nook). To be alerted when they’re ready, follow Paris Pastry on Twitter or Facebook.

    FAQs

Is the map in the e-book aligned with a GPS system?

Yes, it is. So if you tap on a link, a map will open that will take you there. You will need to have an internet connection to use that feature. For those with other mobile devices, and iPad users, the e-book will work on those devices.

In the app, because people often have to pay substantial roaming charges, we attached the addresses to a fixed map. So if you want a map that is linked to Google maps, you might wish to consider downloading the e-book or the Kindle version.

(We are working on an Android version of the app, and appreciate your patience. There’s no need to leave a message or comment requesting an Android version because it it already something under consideration; if you’d like to be notified when it’s available, follow Paris Pastry on Twitter or Facebook. Although I don’t have an Android-enabled device, according to the publisher, you can read the e-book on Android devices using the Kobo app.)

I have an iPad. Which version should I buy?

The app available in the iTunes store will work fine, although it’s formatted for the iPhone and to save on roaming charges, the maps in the iPhone app do not require an internet connection (they aren’t attached to Google maps-although that will be changed in the next update). The book is formatted for larger size reading devices, such as the iPad, and the maps are linked to Google maps, which work with an internet connection.

Is there going to be a printed book available?

Due to the economics of the book business, traditional guidebooks aren’t being published like they used to, and the electronic format is a way to deliver information quicker and more economically. Plus it can be updated regularly. So there will not be a print edition (book) available. There may be a PDF version in the future, but printing out the entire document would be a cumbersome task, hence the nifty electronic edition.

Is there a way to preview the app?

You can download the Paris Pasty Lite, which has some of the features of the full Paris Pastry app.

    What’s new with the app?

Thanks to the many people who had downloaded it and used it to find the best pastries and chocolates in Paris! As I wrote in my last newsletter, I was over-excited snapping away and put too many pictures of delicious pastries and chocolates in the app. So if you don’t wait for them to download and try to scroll frantically, the app may need to be relaunched. Happily, we have a tech team fixing that and the next update will solve that problem. And there’s going to be some new addresses added as well.

If you follow Paris Pastry on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll be notified when the app is updated. And of course, updates are free.

I have other technical questions about the Paris Pastry guide (downloading, compatibility, etc) – who do I ask?

You can send an e-mail to the publisher for tech supper and similar inquiries through the Paris Pastry website.

Is there going to some sort of party to launch the e-book?

Why not? We’re having a get-together at La Cuisine cooking school on February 12th here in Paris. There will be wine and a chance to taste macarons made by their students.

There will also be copies of Ready for Dessert, The Perfect Scoop, and The Sweet Life in Paris, for signing if you’d like a personalized copy, or you’re welcome to bring books you already have to sign. If you plan to come you may RSVP at the Facebook event page.

      Question:

I received an email with the Paris Pastry but was unable to open it. Thanks for this response with the information. However, do I need to establish a password – and if so, where?

I hit the wrong button and this post was accidentally published as a private post, so this is the post. (There is no password needed.) Apologies for the confusion.

I have a Nook. Are you releasing a Nook-friendly format?

      • Heather Stimmler-Hall

Hi Beth (and everyone with technical questions),
I’m Heather, the one who’s in charge of the techie side of the eBook and app. I’ve been trying to get the eBook up on Nook all day, but they only accept files under 20Mo and our eBook is 49Mo! I *could* remove all of the photos to make it smaller. However, as the Nook accepts the ePub files, it’s possible you could just buy the ePub version direct from us and open it in your Nook. If you would like to be the guinea pig, email me your email address (I’m at contact@paris-pastry.com) and I will send you the eBook for free.
      Regards,
      Heather

      I love it!!!

I no longer live in Paris and I don’t have any plans to visit there anytime soon, but I had to have this anyway! Can’t wait to read, and drool over, all the wonderful places you have found. Some of it will surely be a lovely walk down memory lane but I am looking forward to discovering the new as well, through your words. Downloading on my iPad as I type here on my laptop!

      Thank you!

I just checked my amazon kindle account and the kindle version is $4.99; is the lower price only available at the itunes store?

        • David
        David Lebovitz

Yes, it is $4,99 through Amazon. The discount is only the versions through the Paris Pastry website. The Mobi version, however, is formatted to work on the Kindle. I went ahead and clarified that in the post.

Congratulations Dave… You have a right to be excited… I’ll probably never get to Paris but I’ll have fun just cruising here at home…. Dreaming !!!

      David,

      Love the blog.

BTW, Android devices can use epub, mobi, and can run the Kindle app so they can read ebooks from Amazon as well. So really Android should be covered unless you mean you’re bringing out an Android app (as opposed to just an ebook.)

I doubt anyone is using Calibre as a reader but it can also read epub and mobi.

Anyway good luck with the book. I wish I had it early this year when I was visiting.

      John

Thanks John. I don’t have one of those devices so appreciate your sharing what will work on other smartphones.

So all I have to do now is get to Paris?

      • Lisa

macaron marathon sounds boring – rename it a macathon and everyone will be there ;)
but anyway, this e-book sounds amazing, I like how it will even be updated!

      • Anna

      beautiful cover!

      David,

Just to let you know, I’m a B&N bookseller, and I hand sold “Sweet Life” a number of times during the Christmas season. The Nook is a third of the ebook market right now (and growing), so I’d make sure I had that one down before any first day release.

Thanks! I’m not involved in the development or tech aspects of the app, but I know the publisher is trying to make sure that it’s available in the widest variety of platforms.

      Hi David
Can you please explain the difference between this Paris Pastry e-book and your previously released Paris Pastry app for the iPhone? (which, btw, I already have) Do I need both for the complete Paris Pastry experience?

      Thanks!

        • David
        David Lebovitz

The information and photos on the app are the same as in the e-book.

      • Elle

For reading on a PC with Windows and/or smartphone with Android – which version should I buy?

      Thanks!

      • Paris Karin (an alien parisienne)

Just got the newsletter and since I had an Amazon gift card balance still on my US account, I just decided to pay the full $5.13 that they were charging for this! I am so happy that you have worked hard to ensure there is a Kindle version! Thank you so much. (And thank the publisher, too.)

I’m marking down the event in my calendar now. Lindsey of the blog Lost in Cheeseland as well as Sion of Paris (Im)perfect mentioned it to me. My best friend is going back to Antibes that day after a weekend visit in Paris (there’s a quilting show at La Villette we’re going to that weekend), so we’ll see — but I have been reading the most wonderful things about La Cuisine (Kasia of blog Love in the City of Lights just posted about her macaron-making experience). I’d like to be there to check things out and celebrate the success of the Paris Pastry Guide!

Thanks for another great edition of the newsletter, too, and bon courage with all the bricolage ! I hope that perhaps we can see some pics of the new kitchen once it’s finished. Maybe some tweets of the work-in-progress? I should go check there now. :)

      Thanks, David!

      • Elle

Just bought the EPUB version and opened it on my PC with the Firefox addon. This is my very first e-book ever(!) and it looks absolutely delightful!
      Thanks, david!

      • rebecca @ beurrista

I’m buying, saving, savoring and salivating! There are no plans in the near future to be in Paris, but I’m sure that reading through your book will hasten a trip.

This is my very first e-book purchase too. It would take Parisian Pastries to entice me. (And your great writing.)

      • Jennifer Farley (@jwfarley)

      David,
Love this!! Reminds me I’m long overdue for a Paris eating adventure…

      • Shaheen

This is perfect. Finally I can have a good app on my silly Blackberry.

      • Eleonora Matthey

Checked on Kindle. The price of book is $6.99. How do I get it for $2.99?

The price on Kindle is not on sale for $2.99. If you would like to purchase it for the sale price (before Feb 14th), visit the Paris Pastry website that is linked in the post, as it must be downloaded from there for the special offer. There are versions there that work on virtually every type of device. If you need further assistance, there’s a link at the bottom of the Paris Pastry website that you can click for customer service. -dl
