Daveed: Just finished L’Appart—and really want to give you a big hug. Going thru a major remodel in our new townhome and feel much better now after reading your book. I only cried twice during mine (but many more times on my French farmhouse remodel w/the Irish drunk in’12/’13!

I’ve just finished L’Appart – quelle horreur! You have my undying admiration for enduring the horrors, getting to enjoy what sounds like a gorgeous space and creating a good story out of it.
    Congratulations!

Bonjour from Sonoma David! I’ve been reading L’Appart and can’t put it down.
I must say, though, you’ve cured me of the desire to move to France! :-) I applaud your courage in the face of such huge obstacles, not only in looking for an “appart” but in the reno process as well!

Oh, one more thing…it would be lovely to see photos of your finished “appart”, it you ever get the chance to post them on your blog.

Have just purchased a small village house in Languedoc. The audio book gave me many laughs on my runs and walks as I remembered similar incidents – especially at the bank. Now I will need to buy the book to get the recipes!

My book club purchased your book at Omnivore’s book signing. We celebrated by preparing your Swedish Meatball recipe and paired it with Sparkling wine from Sonoma County, (delicious). Loved the meatballs and the book. We’re waiting for your next tome.

    Bonjour again, David,

Today I finished “L’Appart”, and I thank you for writing it. It was so evocative, I feel like I just got back from France! Not sure if you’ve ever read Peter Mayle’s book about his reno of his house in Provence. Both of your books are primers in NOT renovating in France!! Loved the recipes–wish I was a baker as some of the desserts made my mouth water. I’m going to try the chard gratin, though. Savory I can do.
    Keep up the great work!

Thanks! And glad you liked the book. I think (actually, I know…) that renovating anywhere can be a challenge, but doing it in another language, in another culture, can have its own pitfalls. A friend bought a house in the Loire and told me that it took a year to close. I said, “That’s all? You’re lucky…”

OMG. I had no time to check your web page for one week so I missed this event. OK, next time. I really liked the book in spite of the fact that it has completely destroyed any hope that in the future, I will be able to get my own place in Paris. :-)

Just finished reading l’appart which I loved but found the remodeling such a nightmare. Wish there were before and after pictures of your place. The kitchen sounds wonderful as do the recipes.

Off topic but you have the comments closed on an old Bergamot post so will comment here.

Holy cow -> “And if you’re wondered what that unusual ingredient in your cup of Earl Grey tea was, that’s bergamot essential oil. ”

I had no idea and kinda cared/was a little curious but not really. But now that I know, thank you!!! It really is kind of a mysterious what is that flavor.

Earl Grey is in my tea rotation and have it pretty often and on top of that it makes more sense why it’s good with a little bit of lemon too.
