It’s pretty unusual to find anything in Paris at a discount, so imagine my surprise when I came upon this rarity:

…a discount coupon!
scoopicecreamparis.jpg

When I got to the place, however, that a cone of ice cream was 5€ ($6).
Gulp! I guess the concept of le discount isn’t quite yet fully-understood in Paris…spoilsports!

So I decided it’s time for a contest around here.
Yes, the winner will get a free, personally-autographed copy of The Great Book of Chocolate.

Here’s the contest…

These are 4 culinary-related items.
The first person who can correctly name at least 3 of them, will win a copy of The Great Book of Chocolate.

How many can you identify?

1. mysteryitem1paris.jpg
Hint: It’s made of linen.
2. mysteryitem2paris.jpg
3. mysteryitem3paris.jpg
4. mystery4parischocolate-.jpg

Leave entries under ‘Comments’…contest ends November 15th, 2005.
Bonne chance!

Good thing I already have the book. I don’t know for certain, what any of those are. :)

    • John

    1. Oven mitt?

2: Cocoa nibs? Or ground coffee?

    3: don’t know

    4: sweetened condensed milk?

    • Jess

    1. Oven glove (it looks a bit too big though)

    2. Quality ground cooking chocolate (or coffee).

    3. Looks like fruit and nut cake wrapped in muslin (I’d say dundee cake but not sure you can get it in paris).

    4. Sugar syrup in a tube?

    • Lil

gosh… this is tough but i’ll give it a try…

    1. cloth strainer?
    2. ground cocoa?
    3. some sort of veg pie? (do i see cauliflower?)
    4. sugar syrup?

    ah… somehow don’t think i’m going to ever win this… it’s time to order a copy myself through amazon i guess… :)

    • Melissa

Okay, I was just thinking about buying that book, so I’ll give it a shot.
    1. A linen pudding bag (for wrapping things like fruitcake)?
    2. crushed cocoa nibs?
    3. Fruitcakes (perhaps inside said linen pudding bags)?
    4. A tube of sweetened condensed milk!

Hi David, here are my uneducated guesses:

    1. a bag for hanging cheese or storing fruitcakes etc.. or a bag that you put on your feet if you’ve moisturized them before bedtime and you don’t want the greasy lotion to stain your sheets. Not as pretty as the ones at body shop, but still, it could be.
    2. crushed cocoa nibs or coffee not quite perfectly ground.
    3. definitely looks like fruitcakes, perhaps your chocolate cherry fruitcake?
    4. and just because I don’t want to seem like I’m copying Melissa’s answers I’m going to say this is just sugar paste. Although I do like her answer better, but if she’s right then I can’t win anyway, so I’ll try something else.

    1. Is it one of those bags that you fill with herbs and stitch up the other end to boil to make soup?

    2. I’m pretty sure it’s not cacao nibs, but I’ve no clue what it is either.

    3. Pudding bag.

    4. Doesn’t quite look viscous enough to be condensed milk, at least, not the ones I’m used to. But I’ll go with condensed milk anyway.

David! This is an unfair competition! I was the first one to say what I thought the things are but following what I said gave everyone else a good clue!! (grizzle, grizzle, moan, stamp foot, throw oneself on the floor, scream and kick legs!) It’s not fair!!

    • John

OK – after the hissy fit – I reckon number one is a forcing bag!! (for icing or whatever!)

    • Estelle

    1 – Teapot cover (couvre-theiere)

    • marion

    1. une panetière ou une cloche à théière
    2. du cacao moulu
    3. des christmas cakes dans de grands carrés d’étamine
    4. un tube de lait concentré sucré

    • Melissa (:

    1. It looks like a new pudding bag
    2. Ground chicory?
    3. Puddings (or fruitcakes) in aforementioned pudding bags
    4. Criminy, I was going to say a tube of glue, but a) that’s not culinary, and b) I can see the sucre on the label… so, I googled tube+sucre, and have come to the conclusion that it could be Nestle sweetened condensed milk. (Or, it could be glue stuffed into a tube of Nestle sweetened condensed milk.) Either way, I wish they had tubes of sweetened condensed milk here. I would carry one in my purse at all times!

    • simona

    1. A bonnet for keeping the hair out of the pots?
    2/ Coarsely ground coffee beans
    3/fresh figs in mousseline tissue

    • Laura

1.Is it a linen pouch for a bouquet garni?
    2. Just to be different and not say ground cacao, how about ground espresso beans?
    3. Could this be something rising…? Maybe a yeast roll with fruit (cinnamon rolls)…?
    4. And I would have to agree with Melissa, the sucre on the tube does make is seem like it should be sweetened condensed milk.

    • Grommie

    1. Jelly bag
    2. ground cocoa nibs
    3. Looks like cheese cloth around oh, fruit cake?
    4. Almond syrup (just to be different).

    • Judith in Umbria

First is a sac poche here, or a pastry bag, or that’s what mine looks like anyway.
Second is either coffee or chocolate beads.
Third is a pudding bag for ripening Christmas cake.
Fourth is sweetened condensed milk by the tube.

    • Judith in Umbria

I take back number one, cuz now I see there’s no hole. There’s no scale to go by, so maybe it’s for a bouquet garni? Or maybe it is like my bread bag.
Whatcha, want the brand of coffee? Or is it Valrhona choc beads?
Three is still fruit cake getting boozy.
Four is still sweetened condensed milk in a tube.
