Last weekend I wanted to see Dreamgirls.

Unfortunately, though, Dreamgirls had come-and-gone through Paris already. Movies do that around here; if you hesitate, they’re gone by the time you’re ready to see them. Kinda like waiting in line in Paris; if you’re not ready when it’s your turn, there’s someone ready to hop in front and take your place.

However it was playing in a distant suburb, so I would’ve had to take a métro, then an RER train, and finally a bus. So I decided to use this entry to tell you that I was not going.

(And I’m staying far away from any jokes regarding African-American women, since I don’t want to get suspended fired from my blog for two weeks.)

But I would like to tell you that I will be going somewhere.

My web dude is going to be changing and upgrading my server, thanks to the uptick in readership, probably due to all the horse milk-lovers innundating the site. So you might notice some funny stuff happening this weekend; things disappearingand reappearing, comments fluttering around, or images of scantily-clad food bloggers galavanting around covered in horse milk, showing up by accident. Hopefully all will go smoothly.

Except for the half-dressed pictures…which I encourage you to download, print out, and save.
I know I would.

And since you’ll need somewhere else to go this weekend, here are some of my super-duper scoopers pals around the web:

Check ’em out!…

Me and Melissa go head-to-head in a Q & A. And she makes my caramelized Roasted Banana Ice Cream.

Nicky & Oliver in Münich savor the frosty and delicious:days ahead of them this summer.

Gal-pal Elise tests a low-test Coffee Ice Cream at Simply Recipes.

Boy-pal Kevin at Acme Instant Food goes in pursuit of the perfect scoop.

Grazie to Judy at Divina Cucina for sharing gelato and sorbetto inspiration.

Future-fiancée Fanny at Food Beam finally proposes. J’accept!

Derrick takes his Glace-A-Tron 6000 out for a spin. And finds the Rice Gelato worth the wait.

Jenny Sais Quoi tackles Chocolate Sorbet.

Jerry makes Adult Snow Cones.

The Gourmet Peasant makes not one. Not two. But six different flavors.

And David Leite’s givin’ me away!

If I’d known you were easy, I’d have recerved you for my kid. Oh, I took the liberty of correcting a typo. Can you see I’m teed off because you are fidanzato with someone I’m not related to?

Hello David, love reading your blogs. I’ll be in Paris around Apr 24 and will be happy to mail you a Dreamgirls DVD once I hit the city. Email me an address where I can mail it to you. Happy to do it and really no prob at all on my end :–)

Do you think a copy of Dreamgirls is a fair trade for dry-ice packed transcontinentally-shipped salted butter caramel ice cream? Because I have one and I want the other. Hm, probably not. But you won’t know that until after you see the movie…

Hey David, someone started a new for 2007 cookbook thread on eGullet and your book was mentioned. You might wanna hop over there and give yourself some BSP ( blatent self promotion)……

    Judith: Thanks!
I think the new version of my blog software means I won’t need to HTML my brilliant prose anymore, so I won’t be making so many mistakes in French (although I’ll need to find another excuse!)

    Ever: Thanks!
I have a friend that lives here and there, and she promised to bring her copy back for me. Still, I think it would have been more fun on the big screen. But he who hesitates, is perdu around here.

    Randi: Thanks!
I’d better keep the self-promotion around here, where I’m known and (hopefully) loved.

    Well, at least liked…

deb: I’ll see your copy of Dreamgirls for Caramel Ice Cream, and raise you two margaritas and one batch of gnocchi.

Dreamgirls, Caramel Ice Cream, margaritas, AND gnocchi, sounds like a party. Am I invited? :)

Next up is Cinnamon Ice Cream. I’m making chocolate-chip raisin oatmeal cookies to serve alongside of it. I have a potluck to go to tomorrow….seemed like a perfect chance to try out another flavor. :o)

    • Jen

I finished the cinnamon ice cream (and the cookies) … Yuuummmmmmmy!

I’m not that crazy about ice cream … I think that makes me weird. However, it seems to me your book has caused an epidemic of ice cream cravings. Very cool for you.

Missed you at IACP! In your honor, I bought a bag of Garrett’s Cashew CaramelCrunch. Or something like that. It was out of control, David. I ate it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There must be a stick of butter in each bag. So, um, thanks for introducing me to Garrett. My expanding butt thanks you too.

    • David

yes, Cindy, sorry to miss all that yummy IACP conference food. But I’ll bet getting my Garrett’s fix soon. Trust me…

And I did notice that Andrew & Karen took away the award for Best Book of the Year (remember; you read it here first, folks…) Kudos to them both!

The only bad part about the rice gelato is that it’s gone. Ay! I loved all the spices & citrus notes, the comfort of rice, and the funny story prefacing the recipe.

Now the question is when we might repeat the rice gelato since you have so many other recipes I want to try.

We made your banana ice cream recipe last night – it’s so good! Amazingly rich tasting for not having cream or eggs, and it didn’t seem to get as icy as a lot of homemade ice cream (my pet peeve) for the next day. I will be making that one again and again…and I think with that as an example, I must go buy the book!

This post has created a dilemma for me. Do I buy it as a gift and create a diet nightmare while creating also pleasure? Or do I carefully avoid doing harm to loved ones, no matter how good it might feel to be bad?
It has been on my mind since I first read it.
