Proof of Their Existence

I wish I could take credit for this.

Well, kinda.


After thinking about the world’s most unhealthiest combination of foods, chocolate and Fritos, en route to my class in Austin, I was thinking, “I’m wonder what white chocolate-coated Fritos would taste like?” And thought I’d add them to my class repertoire, as a garnish to one of the desserts.

Exept when I showed up, I learned someone had beat me to the punch, when Christy, one of the terrific assistants at Central Market, handed me a bag of candy. Inside were chocolate-covered Fritos with chipotle.

I wish I could say I came up with it first, but I can’t.

I did manage to eat most of them, but maybe I’m better off not taking credit. I had kinda a chocolate-Frito induced hangover the next morning.

And I know it couldn’t have been the margaritas…

    It’s one thing to be under attack…it’s another to be under attack by hot, lusty housewives who are also cheerleaders, who want to be pleasured all night long.

    Am trying to keep it under control, but those housewives are pretty shifty gals…

  • I ended up missing the class last night due to a nasty cold so I sent my husband instead. He had a blast and is now insisting that I make half the recipes. He also wanted me to let you know that he loves your ice cream book although his preferred method is his 1940’s crank ice cream maker from Sears. (He’s kind of a Luddite.)

  • But don’t hot, lusty housewives who are also cheerleaders deserve chocolate covered fritos too?

  • Chocolate-covered Fritos, mmmmm! Anyone who says they’re gross obviously hasn’t tried them. Well, technically I haven’t either, but one of my favorite snacks in the world is Norwegian ‘Smash’, cone-shaped corn chips coated in milk chocolate. Seriously addictive stuff.

  • This makes me miss Central Market a lot. I lived next to it for 3 years, and it’s the best market I’ve ever shopped in in the United States.

  • I think this sounds like a fabulous combination. Ritz used to sell chocolate covered Ritz crackers at holiday time and they were wonderful. Something about that salty mixed with sweet that tastes delicious.

  • In Norway you can buy milk chocolate-dipped corn bugles. They’re not that great, but the styrofoam-like texture of the crispy corn stuff probably works better with the sweet chocolate. It would probably be even better with dark chocolate, but that wasn’t an option.

  • I told you the salty Fritos went well with dark chocolate!

  • My dritiest food secret is nutella and frito lays. Mmmmmm thin crispy chcolatey hazelnut potatoes

  • David – if this is a wordpress blog you may want to look into Akismet – a plugin/add-on for wordpress. It is really very good at catching spam and keeping it inside the admin section in a holding area. I think they may have it for other blog systems as well. Anyways, love the blog – keep up the good work.

  • Well, I didn’t come home from Central Market and fill up your blog with spam, but I did want to thank you again for class. I wish that I had been able to stay for class. Next time, I will know to arrange my schedule accordingly. Your blog is now a permanent part of my day. You are now one of my “rock star” chefs. If you ever need any sponges or cleaning supplies let us know. If I ever get to Paris, I’ll email beforehand for a list ;).

  • I can see how these might have some merit. They’re like a low-brow version of an amazing chocolate bark that Elizbeth Montes of Sahagun Chocolates (Portland, OR) makes with exploded (cracked)corn, ground chile Japones, flor de sal & top-grade bittersweet chocolate. Not as much panache, though (hint: go to Sahagun next time you’re in Portland. You will see what I mean!).

  • I’m sure that chocolate covered Fritos might do it for some people, but then I’ve tasted the chocolate covered waffles from the street vendors in Brussels a few years back—they are mind-numbingly good. Of course anything chocolate covered, providing it’s deep dark chocolate…….mmmmmm

  • WOW! This sounds very good. One of the favorite past time snacks I like to eat is chocolates.

  • Royce chocolates, a Japanese chocolate company that sells in high end locations in Japan, Hong Kong and Bangkok, sells boxes of dark chocolate dipped potato chips. Whenever I travel I usually buy a box. They’re tasty.

  • Good lord, chocolate knows no bounds.

  • My kids were just dipping their tortilla chips in fudge sauce yesterday!! A new afterschool treat at our house.

  • I saw the chipotle fritos at Specs liquor store and thought Hey! They copied my frito idea! But actually, chocolate covered fritos have been around for a while. I love the chipotle idea, though. It makes sense.
