A visit to France is, of course, a cheese lover’s dream. For those who come and want to experience a variety of French cheeses in Paris, there are a number of places that offer dégustations (tastings) as well as tours and wine pairings, guided by experts.

Most of the tours and tastings below are available in English and in the boutiques and fromageries (cheese shops) that I’ve listed, that offer cheese-tasting plates, there is usually someone on hand who will happily explain the various kinds of cheese.

Jennifer Greco: Jennifer leads guided tastings of French cheese and wines. She’s extremely knowledgeable and highly recommended!

Paris by Mouth: Cheese tours of Paris.

Madame Hisada: Specialty cheese shop with salon offering dégustation platters.

Meeting the French: Wine and cheese tastings.

Paroles de Fromagers: Wine and cheese tastings.

Le Foodist: Wine and cheese pairings and tastings.

La Coop: Cheese cooperative from the Savoy region offers self-guided cheese tastings.

La Cuisine: Guided cheese-tasting workshops.

La Vache dans Les Vignes: Cheese tasting plates.

Ô Chateau: Wine and cheese tasting lunches.

Le Cheese Geek: Cheese tastings.

Note: In addition to the organized cheese tastings listed above, most wine bars in Paris offer a selection of cheeses (and wine, of course), available by the assiette (platter). Although the tastings aren’t guided, the staff will be able to tell you about the cheeses.

Bonjour David! When I was in University 20 + years ago, I had the opportunity to do my 3rd yr abroad in Nantes. It was a wonderful experience, from which I still draw so many memories! I managed to see a lot of France and surroundings while there!

Having been a picky eater, I recall promising my mom that I would “try everything at least once”. As I boarded with a French lady, I was at the mercy of her food choices! Well, I left Canada eater of only mild cheddar- but I was a cheese fiend on my return!!! And nothing has changed since!!! I have myself a nice fromagerie that I go to, and count cheese/fruit/crackers as dinner more often than not…

Thanks for sharing these locations, for when I make a return!

Oh my god! I’m gonna need to change my return flight to stay a couple of days more to be able to check all of this places out! Thanks for posting this David.

When I was in Paris I went with school. Although it was an amazing trip, I definitely missed out on the food aspect of the city. I would love to go back and just immerse myself in the culinary culture/ I will go back and immerse myself in the culinary culture. It’s just a matter of when!

    Hi David,
Enjoying your website – recommended by a friend. Is there any way, your readers can information by arrondisement or area, or even metro stop? After a full day of touring, I often want to find a restaurant or specialty store within walking distance of my apartment or hotel. Thank you.

I always link to the actual website of the business or address that I am referring to and did list the arrondissement after the address (in parenthesis). If you click on the link, the website of the place is generally the best place to obtain further information (opening hours, etc, which are subject to change). You can also simply put the address into your search engine and a map will appear which will give you the coordinates, including the neighborhood.

Have you been to La Vache dans les Vignes yet? It just opened in August (wish I’d known when I was there at the beginning of this month!) – they do cheese tastings paired with wine as well. 46 quai de Jemmapes, 75010 Paris

Elizabeth: Thanks. I rode by that place the other day and it looked interesting, although they just opened so wasn’t sure what they were offering. I did add them to the list – and a note that folks can also go to wine bars in Paris where you can generally find a cheese plate on offer, and the staff can explain the various cheeses. Although it’s not a “guided” tasting, it’s another opportunity to sample French cheeses. And who doesn’t need another excuse to do that? : )

    David-
So while on the “cheese and pastry tour” of France, we were spending the day in Apt (Provence) seeing also some Lavender and Olive oil producers because, well, they were there. For lunch we stumbled upon this little spot where they offer a cheese plate with salad, wine, piece of quiche, a “flight” of cheeses-5, and a fromage blanc with fruit and cafe for dessert. The proprietor was delightful, the cheeses came with a little personal description and instructions on the order in which to eat them. She was very knowledgable and friendly and willing to talk about the other cheese she had, all seasonal and regional.

I was just so thrilled with the whole experience. Her place is called Fromagerie Gourmande, 23 rue de la Sous Prefecture, Apt, France, 84400. You can find her only website on Facebook googling “Fromagerie Gourmande Apt”.

Thought you may find it interesting :-)

We have rekindled the cheese trail on rue Montorgueil in Paris…

I had no idea about all these cheese tastings available in Paris. I wish I had done them back when I was living there. What a missed opportunity!
