Menu For Hope IV: Win A KitchenAid Mixer, Ice Cream Maker, and The Perfect Scoop

December 10, 2007
As an avid baker, the one kitchen tool I rely on more than anything else is my KitchenAid mixer. And now you can have one in your kitchen too as part of Menu For Hope IV, raising money for the UN Food Programme in Lesotho.
Through the generosity of KitchenAid, here's your chance to win a brand-new KitchenAid Artisan® Series Stand Mixer. With the included beater, whip and dough hook, this powerful appliance can whip up anything, from a loaf of crusty bread, a buttery cake batter...or a batch of feather-light meringues in minutes.
If you've been dreaming about owning the world's best mixer—bid now!
I was fortunate enough to visit KitchenAid and you can see how these quality mixers are made, which was the thrill of a lifetime. And you'll be just as thrilled since you can customize your very own mixer by choosing from over a dozen colors.
And check this out: as a super-special bonus...
KitchenAid is including the ice cream attachment as a extra gift to the lucky winner so you can spin and churn up your favorite frozen desserts all year-round. Just pre-freeze the bowl, snap it on, then start churning away.
What's that?
You need recipes?
You got it!
I'll include a signed copy of my book The Perfect Scoop, with hundreds of recipes for ice creams, sorbets, and frozen yogurts as well as all the sauces, mix-ins, toppings, and you could ever want.
Click on the logo below and bid now, using prize code: EU17
Important: Please Read Before Bidding:
Because the voltage is 110V (US), the mixer and ice cream attachment can only be shipped to addresses within the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. The ice cream attachment is compatible only with the US KitchenAid models. (You can visit the KitchenAid website for compatibility advice.)
Custom metallic finishes are not an option in your color selection, nor is the Cooking For The Cure pink.
The signed copy of The Perfect Scoop will be sent between January-April of 2008.
Be sure to follow the easy steps in the bidding instructions. Minimum bid is $10 and you can bid as many times as you like. Make sure to put the item number (EU17) next to your bid(s) and use a valid email address, clicking the option which allows us to see your email address, so we can contact you if you win.
If you have questions, please ask in the comments area before bidding. Bidding takes place December 10-21, although I will not be able to answer questions between Dec. 12-16th.
...good luck!

you broke my heart... US only? even if i am able to use 110volts here in manila? then you threw in the ice cream maker and a signed copy of your book? a most cruel and unusual punishment, indeed!

Wow that's an impressive prize. Some lucky person will be very happy.

That's a WONDERFUL prize. I'd LOVE to get that prize if only I wasn't so lucky to already have most of it... I love Menu for Hope -- I've already found other prizes to bid on...

Very nice prize! This is such a great cause.
Posted by Hillary at December 10, 2007 7:08 PM
aw, I would have entered if I could have it in the UK. It probably shouldn't be listed as "EU"

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo............ why why why?!! I LOVE this prize but I live in Aus. so can't bid on this prize..dammit!! David, do you know where can I order kitchenaid at a cheap prize online that DELIVERS to Aus?! Does amazon delivers to Aus - coz I heard that they don't :( The kitchenAid is on sale for US$199 now at Amazon!! I'm soo getting it if they deliver to Australia!:)

oh wow, I'm drooling. I think I need to go chat with Santa and work something out.

Oh no! This was the prize I was willing to give up big bucks for! And I'm just in Canada! :(
Maybe I can get you to send it to a friend...?
Posted by Vincci at December 10, 2007 11:43 PM
Yes, the KitchenAid mixers are ridiculously priced in Australia! One of my best friends just moved to Sydney and wanted to buy one but it was ~$700. Jeez!!
Posted by Jessica at December 11, 2007 12:07 AM
Vincii: Yes, you can have the mixer and attachment to a US address. Please note that it's 110v. The mixer will be shipping directly by KitchenAid, not by me or Amazon.
Jessica: Yes, things are much cheaper in the US. Not just American-made things, like KitchenAid mixers, but even French-made Le Creuset and Staub are less costly too!

I know someone who will be angling for this! Wish it were me, but not willing to leave Italy for any machine.

If the only problem is that 110v is normally associated with the US, though Canada uses the same voltage, can Canadians not bid on this because KitchenAid won't send it to Canada?
Posted by Karen at December 11, 2007 5:52 PM
Yeah, ditto on Karen's question. Can Canadians bid for the mixer?
Posted by Norlinda at December 11, 2007 6:17 PM
Hi All:
KitchenAid USA can only send the mixer and ice cream attachment to an address in the US.
So if you live in Canada or elsewhere and there's someone in the US that will accept the package for you, then they can send it to that address within the 50 United States.
I'm unsure of the specific voltages outside of the US (and France), but this mixer is compatible with the 110V outlets used in the US.
They cannot ship it to Canada, or outside the US.
Thanks & Good Luck Everyone!

David - This time last year you took a break from these worthy efforts to bless harried holiday bakers with your tips on how to prevent cookies from spreading. It was amazingly helpful! I am hoping this year you will take a similar break to help with two pressing holiday baking issues: (1) Can you use reconstituted egg whites in marshmallows (my cousin is pregnant and phobic)?; and (2) My mother's recipe for buttercrunch toffee demands constant stirring and consists only of one cup butter, one cup sugar and one tablespoon water; your buttercrunch toffee recipe cautions against stirring, uses only half as much butter, more sugar and most notably, vanilla and baking soda. What differences do the stirring and baking soda make? Help please!! (P.S. Love your blog; I'm embarassed to say I've made - and enjoyed - almost every one of your recipes that involve chocolate.) Happy Holidays!
Posted by Linda at December 12, 2007 12:29 PM
Linda, my toffee recipe is the same as yours--one cup butter and one cup sugar to 310 degrees, in a heavy bottomed pot, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. It comes out great every time. I throw in toasted almonds just before turning it out in a big pool to harden and cool, and sprinkle on chocolate chunks to melt and spread over the surface of the toffee while it's hot. For Christmas gifts I leave it whole and let the happy recipient break it up. I've often wondered, too, about other recipes for toffee, but this one works so well I've never tried them.
Posted by Linda H. at December 12, 2007 4:34 PM
You can use pasteurized egg whites but check the package since some aren't suitable for whipping (as I found out the hard way once in front of a very large audience!)
Am not sure about the toffee but since candy is so finicking, I'd stick with a good recipe and not mess with success : )
Posted by David at December 13, 2007 6:45 AM
This is a great cause!! I was going to buy one of these mixers this Christmas. However, I'm moving to Rome now and will have to wait until I move. Given the exchange rate and the higher prices in general the mixer will probably cost a months rent. :(

Regarding your toffee recipe, David. You don't need to temper the chocolate? I always do (which is a pain and is why I so rarely make toffee) because I thought it was de rigeur. (I mail my toffee). Tell me I can just spread on chocolate chunks!!!

How wonderful that you are a part of this fundraiser. Last year's was very successful. The organizer is a regular poster on mouthfulsfood.com. It's a great food website with fewer rules and regs than some others.
Isn't it nice to give back, David?

Menu for Hope is a great way to help others, which I have donated.
I just wonder why this prize is in the EU Section but can only be shipped to the US. ?
Though I would very much like to win it.... ;)
Posted by Don at December 19, 2007 4:24 PM
Don: It's because I live in Europe, so I am part of the group of bloggers in the EU. Even though I have a fair amount of readers in the US.
I did ask the US-based bloggers—Bee, Kalyn and Adam—to include a mention of the mixer, which was very generously donated by KitchenAid, on their sites as well.
Best of luck on your bidding!

Thank you. Or as we say in Lesotho, "Rea leboha." (ree-ah lay-boo-ha)

Dear David,
I sending this email again to this blog entry where I was directed to by "foodbeam", to make sure you get it. I was so sure I did not win, see below. I may have gotten crossed eyed reading all the prizes and winners at Chez Pim's site, I did not even see my name & this most sought after prize!
"I can't believe I won the most coveted prize of all! I didn't even realize it... I kept on checking Chez Pim's site, learned of the delay, checked again on the day of revelation. When the list finally came out, there were so many prizes to be doled out & I thought I did not see my name as a winner for the only prize I coveted. I checked my email several times to see if there may be a "You won!" email but sadly, there was none.
Have been quite busy & I only read your last 3 entries today. Please email me for my snail mail & what else I need to do. So happy, so thankful :-) My mixer is on its last breath. I was just thinking of getting me a new one as I was mixing my leche flan last night. What great news! Quite thankful, Guia (MGP)"
