    It’s too bad that I cannot make it to the event there in Paris, but I am lucky enough to have my copy delivered all the way here in Tokyo (thanks to, and I’ve spent last couple of hours turning the pages, snacking on some macarons (from Pierre Herme) and sipping coffee, with my mind drifting over Paris. It’s a great way to get a taste of Paris withoug leaving the house! And oh, I have just had one of my longstanding mysteries explained; why Americans never dare to adopt the metric system! :)

    Thanks for the lovely read and I’m looking forward to cooking from it once I’m done reading from cover to cover.

    By the way, I tried to buy it at the Fnac and Gilbert-Joseph (ok, not the most English book friendly places), with no chance. I really have to go at WH Smith.

  • I just got the Kindle edition.

  • Chaz: When I first heard about it, I was dubious about the Kindle. But I think for people that travel, live in small spaces, or for folks like me, that would go back to the US and have to lug back all sorts of books, it’s an interesting device.

  • Is it available in other electronic formats? I don’t have a Kindle (wrong continent), but I do have a Sony e-Reader – will the Kindle format read on that, do you know?

  • Oh, what a shame- I’m taking a trip to Paris mid-July! Any chance you’ll be doing any other events around that time?

  • when I read “book-signing at WHSmith” i actually thought u were coming to the UK!! My local bookstores never do book-readings that interest me grrr :S

    Not only did I enjoy The Sweet Life, but I just finished the fig and olive tapenade recipe that is in the book.
    I served it on toasted raisin crostini and everyone loved it!

    In your recipe for madeleines on page 222, you call for a glaze of 1 tbs lemon juice and 2 tbs water. Is this correct, or should there be some powdered sugar? (And sorry if you’ve already answered this question before!)


    The 3/4 cup powdered sugar in the main ingredient list, just above the lemon juice and water, is the amount of powdered sugar called for in step 8. -dl

  • Just finished reading your book and enjoyed it thoroughly! I have one question about the word “risquillage,” which you mentioned in the context of Parisians cutting in line. I have not seen this word before and neither have several of my French friends. Might it be instead the word “resquiller” which, according to Larousse means:

    FAM. Se procurer qqch sans y avoir droit et sans payer: Resquiller une place de concert.
    FAM. Se faufiler dans une salle de spectacle, un moyen de transport sans attendre son tour, sans payer sa place.

    Just need to find out, it’s the teacher in me… Thanks.

  • salut patricia: Risquer means “to take a risk” so it was translated to me by a French friend as such, then copyedited by the publisher. (If you have French friends, as you know, there’s often disagreement about the language.)

  • Hi Adrian: At present, I am only doing events in Paris. Events are listed on my Schedule page.

    If there is a venue that is interested in having me come and speak, they can contact me through the website to make arrangements.


  • I would love a signed copy. Problem is that living in the states and no immediate plans to travel to Paris – that might (obviously) be a problem! Do you know if any of the stores would be able to take an order and ship it to me?


  • Hi Jeff: WHSmith does have signed copies, but I think with shipping and customs, the price would be prohibitive. I’d hoped to do a book tour with the book but with publishing woes, I don’t know if it’s going to happen. . Will keep readers posted here if I make it stateside.

    i loved the stories and the personal accounts. btw, the sex shop around the corner from my apartment has a huge black verge in the window!

  • Arrgh… I´ve already ordered two copies from and they always sent some copies with the pages not cut smoothly but all frizzled. I do hope the next one will be alright as I want to get started reading it.

  • hsklein: That’s called a “deckled edge” and a lot of readers really like it, I found out –you can read more in the post on Book Notes. (Check the comments, too.)

  • Yeah! I’ll be in Paris again sooner than I thought for a party in September. Last November I followed your chocolate guide and visited most addresses in your chocolate book. What a treasure trove!
    This time I’ll have less time and have to make the most of it. Any chance you’ll have a book signing Mid-September? ;-)
