Culture Shock

caramels

The “Toffee Buzz” Clif bar that I picked up in the states (as a travel emergency ration) versus Salted Butter Caramels from Jacques Genin that my houseguest left for me.

I don’t think I need to tell you which one won.

chocolate list

But if Jacques is willing to add a salted butter caramel energy bar to his list, I’m going to stock up on those instead, before my next trip.

Or even before.

  • David, I’ve loved your blogs (along with other’s blogs) from the Caribbean!! What would be more perfect than sun, great food and people you have LOTS in common with — friends! NOTHING!.. Cheers to you, the fun, the gathering and the memories! It’s wonderful to experience the ‘delight’ with ya!

  • i’m sorry it came down to the clif bar. that’s a desparate situation.

  • oh no! Get that bar AWAY from those gorgeous candies. IMMEDIATELY!!!

Seriously. Seriously…just do it. File 13. No one gets hurt. Do it yesterday.

    ;)

I believe I am the only person alive that has not seen the National Geographic doc. I’m going now to find it.

P.S. Is Romain in there too? Gosh, I hope so. I am still trying to get a glimpse of the cute-meister.

  • I know the Clif Bar was just used as an inferior example of American vs French food, but, seriously, don’t eat it. The peanut product/samonella problem that has spread through many snack bars includes some Clif Bar products. They have been recalled because some of them used peanut ingredients from the accused factory.

  • Jacques Genin caramels… is that a tear I feel dripping down my cheek? Even almost two years later I can still taste those caramels. Absolutely the best!!

  • Welcome home! Wish I were there…

  • michaela: I’m sorry too. But they lured me in with the word “toffee”…

Lisa T: Maybe if I cried on my toffee bar, the salt would’ve improved the taste : )

Linda H: Unfortunately it’s gone (gulp!) but I did avoid buying peanut butter on my trip to the states, which I usually stock up on. Luckily I have some organic extra-chunky packed away from a trip a while back.

  • I had some salted butter caramels from a store in L.A. I can’t remember the name of it, the candy was a gift.

They were among the best things I have tasted in my entire life.

  • a Nat. Geographic doc? Where?! Is it on the Web somewhere?

  • I went to Jacques Genin a couple of days ago and wanted to get a few chocolates for me and my husband. Darn it, but they packaged them up all pretty (which meant I couldn’t dig in) and my husband has YET TO OPEN THEM. Meaning I have been deprived!!

Thankfully the guy at the counter gave me a bon-bon with my purchase, but that was definitely fewer chocolates than I wanted to consume!

  • Adrian: I think it was the Diary of a Foodie episode I did, which was shown on various networks.

There’s a link to the episode you can watch online for free: Diary of a Foodie

  • My name is Carol and I’m a caramel-holic.
And I can’t wait to get my FIX!!!
    Thanks David for the reminder..

  • That guest would have a permanent invite at my house. Heck, I would even name a candy dish after them! You know… assuming the quantity was generous. ; )

    Cheers,

    ~ Paula

  • Thanks for the link you provided. I tried N.G., but came up with nothing…looked back on this section of your blog today and found it. Great fun!!!!!

  • yes, thanks much for the link, David!

  • What would you say.. Jacques Genin caramels vs Fouquet camarels? I stopped by Fouquest yesterday, and am wondering if its worth a stop by JG as well, if I’m going to be in the Marais for a falafel.

  • Could you add arrondissements for your recommendations?
