When I was in New York City, I was delighted to spend some time with my friend Erin McKenna, owner and head baker at BabyCakesNYC, which is one of the sweetest places in Manhattan. And Erin may be the sweetest thing in all five boroughs – and beyond!
We had a nice chat, then headed to the kitchen where she taught me how to make gluten-free doughnuts (recipe included) and create the signature frosting swirl on their fantastic cupcakes, which I was anxious to master. Because those who succeed, have the distinct honor of proudly wearing the BabyCakes uniform.

What fun! You are terrifically telegenic – I hope you make more videos.
This was such a fun post and wonderful video—so inspiring as I just recently learned that I am gluten intolerant….bRAVo!!!!

Maaw! What a lovely little video to wake up to. x
TERRIFIC!
Wish you had a cooking show!!
Such a cute video – it looks like you guys had a blast together! Any chance there will be a BabyCakes/David Lebovitz collaboration in the future?
Wonderful! Hard to tell which one of you is the true Babycakes!
What a sweet video! That last scene totally cracked me up.
LOVED this video – thank you! It’s great to see and hear you “live” like that. Such fun to watch…I had a good laugh!
This video is great–I love the way it was put together, and the way your humor shines through (just like in your books and on your blog). And the scene with you stuck in the uniform–priceless.
What fun! I’m surprised but pleased to see they bake their donuts. The idea of frying things at home has always scared me away. I have most of these ingredients on hand from trying her wonder buns recipe, so the donuts are worth a shot!
Loved the video! Want to make doghnuts (never knew they were made in doughnut moulds in the oven) and cupcakes too!
Love it! Wait, no vanilla extract in France? Just the bean? The last scene was hilarious! Haha
The baking surprised me – I would have thought the doughnuts were fried. It was nice attaching a voice and movement to David Lebovitz – a person I know only through the written word. and that last spot – maybe you better stay with your own shirts, rather than the Babycakes uniform.
The video is fantastic! I love baby cakes and Erin? You are very good on video!
So much fun to watch! Thanks David and Erin!
How sweet and natural. Big Baby~~you are a star!
Hey David great to meet you! That’s me in the video at 8:06!
Cheers!
What a fun video. I’ve never been to Babycakes but will definitely plan to visit next time I’m in NY. So are you a master donut maker now? If so, I see a new book in your future.
You’re awesome. My favorite part? You “slipping into” that pink dress – hahaha
David, you are so darn cute.
Fun video. Fun to see the person behind all the humor on this blog. You like to play and.I love you for that!
this was a wonderful video! it has been bookmarked!
This is a great video, and I love how you reminisce on your experience at Chez Panisse. Once I get a chance to go back to New York I would love to visit all the places you tell your stories about. Would be nice to be an apprentice in one of them to learn what they do so well. Thanks for showing this to us!
I have just started reading all things David! It was great to see him live in a video. He is just as funny and charming in real life as he is in his books and blog. I am having a big birthday party tomorrow and will try one of his recipes for the first time. I am wanting to impress some guests so I am sure David’s recipe will be a shining star!!! I agree with other comments…do MORE videos!!!
Wow! This video is so entertaining, and your blog is one of my favorite discoveries since moving to Paris.
She’s so cute: “Ok that’s really French of them.”
David – it’s great to see you as opposed to just reading you.
These addresses look delicious!
Thanks for sharing – I really enjoyed learning more about you.

great, fun video…now I have to replay it to perfect that frosting swirl!
CUTE!!!! Thanks!!!!
Spanx! LOL
Dear Cooking Channel,

Ha great video David..seriously you need to have your own cooking show!!
You are adorable!
David, I know I am not alone when I say this….
You make the world a better place!!!!!!!!
Thanks for all your advice, research and insights into food, France and many other things.
She should tie her hair out of the way and wash her hands after she handles her hair.
YES, DAVID, I TOO WISH YOU HAD A COOKING SHOW. YOU ARE GREAT ON CAMERA. SUCH A HAPPY GUY !!
That was so entertaining! Thanks!
Fun video…David you are a natural! Your sparkling personality shines through!
Wow David, Nice Package!
It’s digitally enhanced! ; )
Ha, love that last dress scene change! (I was also tickled by seeing the last shots of people at the book signing–Maangchi was there!)
You are so funny! More videos!
David, so I’ve been hearing wonders about Babycakes for awhile now, and though I live in NYC, I’m shamefully not yet made a visit; however, after watching the video of you and Erin, I’ve vowed to make the trip this week! So the big question is…..
What do you recommend? :)
Oh, this video made my day! What a bliss to watch it! Watching people baking and laughing is at least as comforting as baking myself! Thanks a lot, your blog is truely amazing!
cute vid ;-) And, damn, Erin looks so much like my boss at the chocolate shop! Twins maybe?
What a fun video! I look forward to stopping by Babycakes the next time I’m in NY!
I wanted to thank you for all your Paris insights. I’m packing my bags for my first trip to the City of Lights next week and you’re website has been a wonderful instrument in all my planning! I’ll be eating my way through the city streets guided by all your recommendations! I’m stressing on what to pack, I find Paris’s reputation for being chic and fashion savvy Intimidating!!
Au Revoir!
Kathryn
Loved the video! You are so ‘simpatico’. Thank you for sharing your baking knowledge with us. Smiles. ~Carmen
Look forward to more videos. ~Carmen
This was fun to watch….. I didn’t realize BabyCakes was vegan as well as gluten free, been entertaining what it would be like and the benefits of eliminating all animal products, not looking good though ;)
Love the video David; hope you will do more of them!
Adorable video! Great to finally hear your voice:)
Loved this. You need your own show.
So great to hear your voice. What fun that was, thanks!
No, you didn’t! hahahah The outfit, priceless. And you met maangchi, how nice! :)
So much fun – I feel like rushing out to make cupcakes and trying the “secret” Babycakes frosting technique right now! Like David, I’ve never baked gluten free, but now that I’m inspired. Do more videos – s’il vous plait!
What can I say…”pretty in pink”. Hope this isn’t creepy coming from someone you don’t know, but you’re ADORABLE!! Cheers from the Pacific, Karen
You forgot Ripe for Dessert!
Love, Love, Love! This was adorable, sweet and memorable. You are an inspiration and combined with my love for BabyCakes… it can’t get any better.
I enjoyed this video. I’ve gotta get me a babaycakes doughnut
