I’ve teamed up with two of my favorite spirit shops to offer specially-curated bar boxes with a selection of French spirits and apéritifs. And to sweeten the pot, for a limited time, each bar box includes a bookplate signed copy of Drinking French.

Slope Cellars wine and spirits shop in New York includes a bottle of Old Forester Bottled-in-Bond Rye, Forthave Red Apéritif Bitters (a small-batch red bitter apéritif, made in Brooklyn), a bottle of Citadelle gin, the first gin made in France, and a demi-bottle of Dolin sweet vermouth from the French alps, as well as a copy of Drinking French. With those bottles, you’ll be able to make several drinks in the book, including my favorite cocktails, the Boulevardier and the Americano, a low ABV apéritif that’s perfect for easy-going holiday sipping.

(Free delivery is available within Brooklyn and Manhattan. Please select “delivery or store pickup” at checkout and provide all essential delivery information. Due to state laws, the store can only ship to NY, D.C., Florida, and Alaska.)

The spirits experts at K & L Wine Merchants have put together their very own Drinking French Bar Box. Their box includes a half-bottle of green Chartreuse, as well as a bottle of Ténarèze Armagnac, the classic spirit from Gascony. Also included is a bottle of French apéritif Byrrh Grand Quinquina, and Domaine Hubert Pays d’Auge Vieux Calvados, a très French brandy distillied from Normandy apples! Note that the bottles listed in the photo above aren’t the bottles currently available, which has been changed to reflect current availability.

(The Drinking French Bar Boxes are available for curbside pick up at their San Francisco, Hollywood, and Redwood City K & L retail locations by ordering in advance. The bar boxes can be delivered within California, as well as North Dakota and New Hampshire.)

Signed Books

Many have asked about getting a signed copy of Drinking French. Book Larder has bookplate signed copies of Drinking French available for purchase at their shop or by mail. (They also offer international shipping.)

In Paris, Café Méricourt has signed copies of Drinking French for purchase at the café during opening hours, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. (Due to confinement rules, hours subject to change. Check their Instagram page for the most up-to-date information.)

    David,
What an incredible gift! Unfortunately, we live in Tennessee so not this year…
I just want you to know that I have every one of your books, including the out of prints, as I suspect many others do as well. I doubt I’ll ever get to France but your posts make me feel like I’ve been there already!

I’d love one of those boxes, but they don’t ship to Germany (quite rightly, as it makes no sense to import stuff from France to the USA and then send it back to Europe). Any chance that a similar box will be available to your European fans some time in the foreseeable future?

No delivery to Massachusetts!!??? Bummer!!! Perfect gift for the perfect person I have in mind.

The U.S. has a (frankly) crazy patchwork of laws that vary from state to state and in some cases (states) wine can be imported or exported and in the same ones, no distilled spirits. It’s baffling.

If we are living in a state that Oks the box,I’m wondering if its illegal to receive and then forward?

SF K&L has also sold out!!! :(

They will have them back in stock in a day or two. There is an option to put yourself on the waiting list and since signed copies of the book are limited (due to Covid), that’s the best way to get one.

Thanks for your patience! : )

Thanks I will try again. Happy Holidays from SF, we love your instagram lives!!!

    Love the Drinking French book.
Is there anything to substitute for cognac? I want to make the grapefruit twist and have no cognac.

      Another brandy would work

Still not back in stock at K&L—such a pity! Was really hoping to order a box for my dad for Christmas (my parents live in SF so could pick up curbside).

I missed ordering the K&L box for my cousins gift so I made my own. Drinking French in the center, of course. Pierre Ferrand cognac (with a recommendation to try the French Manhattan), RinQuinQuin à la Pêche (with a note to check out the relevant sections in the book), small bottles of your crème de cacao and rosemary syrup with directions to use them in the Chocolat à l’ancienne and Rosemary Gimlet. A jar of the spicy glazed nuts. A big 1 lb bar of dark chocolate with a note to use it in the Chocolat Chaud and try adding a splash of Green Chartreuse plus a bottle of the Chartreuse. I had lots of fun using ribbons to tie my little notes on each item.
Now, to put together another K&L order…

Hi David! Happy New Year. Your gift box was a huge hit. I want to give this gift to so many people now, but K&L is out of stock or no longer doing the box. Any chance you can get them to restart it? Slope is too expensive for the West Coast ($51 for shipping). Greatest gift ever!

I’ve asked K & L about it but haven’t heard back yet but think they may have only run it as a holiday item. I’ll drop them another note and if I hear anything back, I’ll update here. Glad you enjoyed the Drinking French box!
